Matt Cutts' Dramatic Response to Irrelevant Search Engines

So someone asked Matt what is favorite tweet was from Pubcon.

Matt Cuts shares his reaction after reading a tweet that said, "Leo Laporte says he does't know if search engines are going to be relevant in 6 months. And somewhere Matt Cutts spit out his coffee."

From his reaction, he does feel search engines are going to be around allot longer than 6 months.

Why should we care what Matt thinks? Because he may be the leading authority in the world on the Organic Google Search Engine product.

About Matt Cutts:
Matt Cutts, a Google Engineer, specializes in search engine optimation (SEO) issues. He is widely known in the SEO community for his application of Google's Quality Guidelines.

Matt is known for carrying around a little book where he keeps research notes on specific websites. And yes, if he discovers that a website clearly violates Google Quality Guidelines, he can manually remove that site from the Google index. We would love to get our hands on that little black book. Clearly Matt and Google take quality seriously. Their number one priority, according to Matt, is to have the best user experience possible.

We agree with this approach of getting rid of sites that score high on the search engine score because of crappy SEO manipulation such as keyword stuffing, Cloaking, Paid Links and Duplicate content. Sites that score high on search results should be there due to popularity and relevancy and not because someone bought a bunch of links or stuffed the same word over and over again on the page.

As bloggers for Xponex, you have a responsibility to follow the rules of both Bing and Google. Always write original material, cite yours sources and find a relevant graphic for your post.

The Panda Update with Danny Sullivan and Matt Cutts

Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Land and Matt Cutts of Google discuss the latest Panda Update.

First Danny presents Matt with a large panda bear and some matching panda footstools.

The reference to Honey Badger being the next Google Named update is a joke because internally, Bing calles the updates to Bing's Webmaster tools, Honey Badger. Plus what makes it even funnier is this video which Randall states in a funny way, "Honey Badger don't care."

Cutts: There's this mass perception outside the search industry that theres too much low quality stuff in the search results.

Sullivan: We had Panda 1 in the US, and we had Panda 2 outside the US in English language. Then we had Panda 2.1 and are we at Panda 2.2?

Cutts: There was a quality launch meeting last week were we approved another iteration of Panda. So the way to think about this is we [Google] are going to iterate at least through the end of the year. We are going to be thinking about how can we pull in new signals, how can we find high quality content. We don't consider it finished. We know there are some cases where we know ok this is a good site and we want to return it in the search results. And we know there are sites that are not a good experience for users. So we're going to continue to iterate. I don't know when we are going to launch fully internationally so not just in English. So there is still some things to do there.

Sullivan: Will the update that comes after this be called honey badger?
Cutts: [Laughs] The honey badger update? Ah that is a good name. Honey badger don't care.

100 Links

According to Matt Cutts, the nine year old guideline limiting 100 links per page has been removed from the official Google Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide.

Keep in mind that the page rank still is distributed among all the links on the page, so having hundreds of links would not be very effective for sites with low page rank on their homepage.

Do tag clouds help or hinder SEO?

I think Tag Clouds can be good for both the user and search engines. If someone is looking for an Office Security Camera, it would be nice to have a tag that would take me to all the articles about "Office Security Cameras". I don't want to read about residential or industrial security cameras. I want articles and information about a particular subject.

The biggest problem with tag clouds is that they are so misunderstood by most bloggers that they are either not used or over used. Having a list of key terms is helpful, exceptions could be made, but some standard should be attempted in order to keep your categories meaningful.

So what about this blog? Na we don't use tag clouds. Not yet anyway.

From the video, I selected two quotes. The first one reminds me of the movie Scarface. The second comment is funny.

Making The Best Of The Title Attribute

Ever notice that little text box that pops up when you mouse over a link on a webpage? Well, if not: you should have.

What you are seeing when that happens is the title attribute on a hyperlink.

When blogging, it's in your best interest to pay attention to when and how you use title attributes. If the link is relevant to your post, and to a site you own or wish to promote, then you should always use a title attribute. This would be the case even when the anchor text is perfectly self explanatory.

By using the title attribute in this manner, you provide added information about a link when a reader mouses over it, thus increasing the likelihood they might follow it. Additionally, you improve the post itself by naturally increasing your relevant keyword density which aids the search engines when they attempt to figure out what your post is about.

As mentioned above, even if the anchor text is a perfect match for the hyperlink, the title attribute should still be used. Just be sure you use it to explain the link in a slightly different way. Keep in mind the title attribute and the anchor text should never be exactly the same.

For example: If the anchor text was "Upgrade Your Security System" then the title attribute might be "GeoVision Surveillance System Upgrades".

In your HTML, the title attribute can precede or follow the link as seen below.

<a href="http://www.camerasecuritynow.com/Geovision_Version_Upgrade.asp" title="GeoVision Surveillance System Upgrades">

Try your best to have a strong correlation between the anchor text and the title attribute; remember a good title attribute is all the more important when you have to use a one word anchor text. For example: Do not use anchor text of "dog" and a title attribute of "CCTV Surveillance System Upgrades".

So remember, using proper title attributes on your hyperlinks will make for an overall better blog post because it makes your post both better for the reader and for the search engines.

Promoting your Blog Posts on Forums

If you build it, they won't necessarily come. You have to tell them what you did. That is where our social efforts come in, the promotion of your blog post.

We have several social initiatives in place to help you promote yours and others blog posts and web pages. One of the most effective things we can do is promote our content to Xponex generated communities/forums.

We have Monroe and Middletown, Ohio communities as well as a techie community.

Here are our web communities:

I plan to add two more forums, one for SMB's and One for Web Marketing.

All you do is take a relevant snippet of your blog post, and post it on the forum. If you are not registered to post, please register yourself. I ask that you additionally post on existing links like the ones welcoming new Tech Army members or other bloggers promotions. That way our forum will be more enticing for others to post to.

What To Do When You Are New To A Blog

Here's an answer to a common question I received today that could help everyone:

Question:
I was also assigned the Computer Rental Blog and I've never posted for that before either...I don't really deal with any of the computer rental information so I wasn't exactly sure what you wanted me to do with this one?

Answer:
On any blog you have not worked with before start by looking at the existing posts. Look at the links you see in the posts and in the blog roll.

Keep in mind our content is really there as a reason to create these links that can pass value to our other properties. In that context, any story that’s on topic with the blog, well written, and full of useful and relevant links to our properties is a good story.

In this specific case, as the blog is tied to the rentacoputer.com domain, go ahead and take a look at the domain itself. Find those useful stories buried deep in the site (try checking out the site map or articles page) and use them as inspiration for a post. Be sure to add relevant in-text links as you write. Remember deep linking is best and whenever possible do not repeat a link that's already on the page.

May Day Algorithmic Change and Long Tail Searches

Matt Cutts explains about the latest Google Algorithmic change called "May Day". Many are seeing changes in their SERPs for long tail searches according to Web Masterworld's Google SEO News and Discussion Page.

Here is a good example from gohome:

"My biggest concern right now is my main site, it started to tank on Tuesday 11th May and its more than just longtail thats dropping. One keyword I held 2nd position on for a couple of years has started to move further down the page. I havent done anything mad with the site, its mostly unquie content articles has been rock solid for the past 4 years."

Over the past month Xponex properties have seen changes in pageview both up and down. However our largest change was with Computer Service Now with a 21.4% increase in visits in May vs April along with a 30.09% increase in total page views. With our largest gain in Colorado with a 51.13% increase in page views.

Finally, what's with Google naming their algorithmic changes? Google Dancing, Google Caffeine, Google May Day. What's next the Google Apocalypse?

Once again, this tells me that content rules and weak spam links drool. We must continue to write new, interesting and unique content about our products and services and link accordingly. It's working! Thanks!

Padding your Pictures on Blogs

If you have pictures on your blog post you should pad them so the text isn't squeezed too close to the image. Here is how you can add padding.

Go into the html (click on html tab) and modify by adding this style html code:

----------------
Just edit HTML on the blog post and add the above code to the img src code.

I like to use 10px for my pictures, but you can use more or less depending on your post and how nice it looks.

Let the Photo Write the Story for You

Advertising is nothing more than story telling.

Oxy-clean can really get your clothes cleaner, and its really exciting. And yes, I always jump in the air when I buy a Toyota.

Technology writing doesn't have to be boring. If you can come up with examples using characters in a photo to tell the story. For example, Recently I blogged about Cindy A. who put together a 100 computer training session in 24 hours.The story is all about Cindy starting with a Monday morning meeting. By Friday, she was thinking about how much it helped to have Darcy from Rentacomputer.com.

What are the reasons people rent technology? Tell it with a story.

The story of the amazing wireless projector and audience participation.

Laptop got ran over by a train, another laptop disaster.

Not sure what the story is here. But my challenge is to start with the photo first. A picture is worth a thousand words. Start with an idea, then seek an image to fill that idea and help tell the story.

Yahoo!'s UGC Detection and Rating Patent Application

United States Patent Application #20090271391 dated: October 29, 2009 is Yahoo!'s attempt to find and rate UGC-User generated content.

Many of our websites and blogs have content generated by our website visitors. All of our blogs allow comments, that's UGC. Our discussion forums, The Voice, MUSA BF and TA Blog Forum also have significant user generated content.

Why would Yahoo! care? Does Google, Bing and Ask care? One reason is spam bot generated content. If Yahoo! can detect SPAM, they either target the entire document or specific comments as spam and remove them from indexing factors.

Alert: Black Hat Problem
That brings up an interesting problem. If the search engines are going to detect spam, can't SEO's spam other sites to get pages removed? If every topic contains scripted spam, then a site could be damaged by competitors or just random acts of web violence.

So what are we going to do about it?
Be on the look out for SPAM bots and signatures with spam. Lookout for suspicious activity, competition on our forums. And when you find SPAM, kill it! And if you can't kill it, report it to web@xponex.com.

The Project Gutenberg collection was produced by tens of thousands of volunteers and was mentioned at the 2009 SMX Advanced in Seattle as a good place for content.

Use this Gutenberg Project Main Page to Search for books by words and author. You can even downloat the plucker version of any eBook and read it on your iPhone or Blackberry.

You don't have to worry about copywrite infringements with works from the Gutenberg Project.

The word free in the English language does not distinguish between free of charge and freedom.

Free of charge means that you don't have to pay for the book you received.

Freedom denotes that you may do as you like with the book you received.

If the book you got is just free of charge, you may not even make a copy of the book and give it to a friend. But if the book you got is free as in freedom you may do anything you like with that book. Clearly free as in freedom beats free of charge.

Fortunately almost all Project Gutenberg ebooks are free of charge and free as in freedom.

Always Add a 'BY' Line to Give Credit and Protect Work

When posting on SMBnow.com, MainStreetMonroe.com or MiddletownUSA.com you should make sure that there is some sort of byline to the story.

Google News wants to see multiple writers before they will syndicate new through the Google News service. Adding a byline tells Google that this story was written by a unique person. This helps make our news get into Google News.

So next time you post a story, please include a byline.

Catching More Content with Honey

Ok, you've just been assigned to post content that was already written and all it needs is a photo and or a paragraph. Great content with little effort on our part.

But how do we keep that content coming? Follow these simple rules, and you will be rewarded with more content in most cases.

1. Post the content with a nice photo from Stock Photos or what ever.
2. Email the content provider (cc:web@xponex.com), be sure to include:
-complement on the content
-a link to the home page where their content link resides
-a linke to any sub page where content may reside (such as Schools)
-a permalink
3. Invite them to send web@xponex.com or you personally, to send content in the future.

Thank them.

That's it. It fast, its easy, it assures you of at least 1 read on your post and its the Xponex Blogger rule.

Believeable Content for MSM, MUSA, SMBnow

For that extra proof of content, always site one or two sources that you either got content from, or their content supports your content.

Protect our News Websites MSM, MUSA and SMBnow
If there is a story that is in the newspaper, and you are reporting on it, make sure you cite both the author and the newspaper. A link is not necessary but is ok if you 'nofollow.'

If possible, try to get a second or third source. You have up to an hour to write an article, so do a little 'Googling.'

To make your article the most believable, prove to your readers that you have done your research. You do that by citing your source. One benefit is writers will find your story, because you cited them.

If you are writing for MiddletownUSA.com, MainStreetMonroe.com or SMBnow.com, your story should be reported more like news, less like commentary.

Save the commentary for the blogs and discussion threads. Get real facts and try to present them as they are as best as possible.

Newspaper Journalistic Skills Weakened by the Economy
Most local newspaper articles in our area are hastily put together. Articles are written with little thought about making great sentences with multiple references. Newspapers, like the New York Times, are going out of business so they cut costs by making everyone write more content. Thus you end up with a product written by poorly paid overworked staff.
